THE CHALLENGE
BMF Advertising regularly produces vast amounts of printed materials. These include everything from large volumes of client artwork to typical office documents.
Unfortunately, BMF found up to 15% of these materials were being printed unnecessarily - creating huge volumes of wastage. This wastage was having a significant financial impact on the agency given the high costs associated with the nature and volume of the work produced. This work includes large pieces of artwork that are often printed in colour.
The agency also found it increasingly challenging to manage its mixed fleet of multi-function and graphic arts printers based in Melbourne and Sydney.

THE SOLUTION
To prevent the costs of printing spiralling further and better manage printing operations as the volume of work handled by the agency grew, BMF talked to Upstream about the challenges it faced. Following a detailed audit, Upstream developed a customised offering to address the challenges faced by BMF, which included:
- Comprehensive managed print services – Management of all printing equipment purchasing and finance, installation and service and toner supplies.
- New devices – Roll out of high-quality Fuji Xerox printing devices for artwork and day-to-day printing needs.
- Real-time reporting – Intelligent print monitoring system for detailed insight into who is printing what.
- Swipe and release technology – Solution that requires employees to swipe a card through a reader before a document is released from a printer.
“Aside from the cost savings, waste reduction and ease of management, one of the unexpected benefits of switching to working with Upstream has been having an account manager focussed on ensuring our needs are met, no matter what the situation. Lots of people will sell you a printing solution but they don’t all have the dedication, experience and people needed to keep that solution working.” Tony Barker, IT Manager, BMF Advertising.
